I've always dug a trench a couple of inches deep about a spades width and scattered the pea seeds. The seed people suggest 2" apart in rows 2 ft apart which doesnt seem many pea plant per sq ft. How do you plany yours ?

In a gutter in a staggered triple row and then plant into trenches on the allotment when about two to three inches high. They slide out into their trench and make life much easier. I sow mine about 2" apart but as a double row a few inches apart, works for me.

1000mm x 600mm box 64 plants in 4 rows. Its a bit crowded but providing I am careful with the watering I manage to get a half decent crop.

Straight in the ground - a handful per foot run, not to fussy about how they land
Cover row with fleece, poly or netting to stop birds pulling them out and remove it once they've germinated.

The reason the distance between the pea rows is that once they fill out you wont have much room between them to pick your produce also to allow air flow and sunlight to get to the other rows..
use fencing approx 1 meter high and use stakes for support the lenght of the row can be up to you for example the width of your allotment plot.. sow both sides of the fence for an more prolific crop..

Also try something different like purple podded peas they are a wonderful plant that is simular to sweet pea flowers and grows to a hieght of 6 feet..very prolifiic and edible marrowfat pea..

I dont sow mine directly in the ground because of slugs/mice etc. I have got into the habit of using loo rolls and also a 'specimin' pea from which I save seeds, in a large trug with compost.Comment

I try different ways but I know that this year they will be wrapped in fleece or debris netting after they kept getting eaten last year.........S*d the housework I have a lottie to dig

I use that semi rigid plastic mesh stuff that they sell in rolls at the garden centre, as you say, mesh is too flimsy and you can't use it year after year.
