  • Mixed up seed potatoes

I bought some seed potatoes from the garden centre - it was fill a bag for a quid. Now as I wanted two types (charlotte and king edward) I put one type in one bag, stuffed that into the bottom of another bag (to keep them separate) and then put the other ones on top - so I got less potatoes than I could have done because the inside bag took up room. Either way, I thought it was a good way to keep the two types separate.

Problem is now I can't remember which ones were which!

Is there any way of telling????

I've attached a photo - my guess would be the charlotte are the ones on the left and the king edward are on the right (based on the fact one of the potatoes on the left has a peely like skin like some charlotte spuds, and some on the right have pinkish tinges to the shoots like the pink tinges on king edward spuds).

    What do you guys think?!

King Edward: pink marks on the skin

Your chits are a bit pale looking: have you got these in a cool light place? They should darken up a bit in the light

yep on the windowsill in the garage now. I only took them out the bag 2 days ago - they chitted themselves to this point. I can't tell the skin colour well because they are all a bit dusty - is it ok to clean them up with a cloth? Only my second year of potatoes so new to them.

I agree with 2Sheds, one more point I would break off the very long pale shoot so that a better sprut may form.

I would take those white shoots off and they will resprout properly.

I purchased some "maris piper's" from shannon's garden center in Forest Hill the other week, Guess I better move them from where they are into a sunny place then as they are just hidden under a shelf at the mo.

Should I take them out the bag they came in?

Yes take them out off the bag they need light to chit properly. Even if its a mesh bag take them out as this will damage the spruts later on.

Still waiting for half mine to arrive at the allotment shop (Charlottes and Picassos) - I have my red duke of york and lady balfours chitting on top of my wardrobe - they're luckily quite easy to tell apart!!

DG if you can get hold of an old egg box you can stand them up in the box, look for the end with the most 'eyes' and have this uppermost. This will prevent damage when they start to sprut.
