  • Sherlock Vs ....erm...Sherlock

Hoping the title sort of gives you a clue to what I am talking about...?

So....the modern takes on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous creation.

(ie Sherlock the series on BBC and Ritchie's Hollywood film ones)

    What do you think?

    Which is best?

Or maybe you dont like either and prefer older - most truer to the original versions?

Maybe you cant stand any of them?

    I'd love to know

I haven't seen the new films yet but what I've seen of the new series I don't much like. Why don't the creators just build a new character instead of trying to rehash an old one?

My favourite was the 1984 series starring Jeremy Brett.

I loved the first 3 episodes, but the one last week I thought was tedious and tenuous. All the T words.

I spent most of it watching the wood burner as I was sat next to it all comfy and snuggled.

Like the films but think the series is just a re-hashed Jeremy Creek!

Not seen the films but thought the TV series episode I saw was total pants, hated the way they used the camera, enough to give you a headache. Saw some old ones years ago and quite liked them, they just kept it simple and about crime solving not special effects.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I love the old Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce films, absolute classics, but I did enjoy the last tv series of Sherlock, quite quirky and made me smile alot :-) Haven't seen the new episodes yet, might dig them out on iPlayer later.

We like the new Sherlock although last weeks wasn't the best one, interested to see what they do with The Hound of the Baskervilles tonight (BBC One HD 8:30pm).

To be honest I can't say I have seen a bad Sherlock Holmes yet, The different interpretations often give it a new twist - the books are written to allow imaginative licence (my opinion) so it usually works for me. Young Sherlock, not based on any one particular story, was really good - I can watch it over and over. I haven't yet got hold of House of Silk by Mr Horowiz, but if anyone has please let us know how good it is?

The new Sherlock is quirky and fun but the episode last week missed the mark by a mile. Sherlock movies are both very good (maybe Mr Frosty and I are easily pleased?) Jeremy Brett as Sherlock was good but of the era and now seems dated.

I rather like it. Mr.Cumberbatch, does a nice job. I'm waiting for Watson to kick in, though. I went through a stage of reading Sherlock Holmes just to see what the fuss was all about. Thought it was all rather clever. In my mind, the acid test will be the hound of the baskervilles. The Beeb's adaptation will either do it no justice, or will make a definite impression that blows away the cobwebs. Can only imagine what they would do with the red headed league, the blue carbuncle or the one with the snake that comes down the ceiling...

Changing story details to make them work in 'today' I can live with, changing personalities to suit, annoys me. The 'blurb' about the Baskerville one was a complete off-put, so I left the room and came here. I haven't seen much of any of them, but what I have seen just isn't my sort of program.

I haven't seen any of them, I remember bricking it watching the 'hound of the baskervilles' as a kid.

I was watching the great barrier reef on the other side, followed by ricky glovers 'f*** off, I'm fat. I can do both low and high brow.
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

I've only see one, and I really enjoyed it. Have got the old lot, and will watch them as/when I can.

I've not really seen any older ones - apart from a vague recollection from childhood that I was scared stiff by the Hound of the Baskervilles, but no idea who acted in it...
I absolutely love the Benedict Cumberbatch series though - love the effects on screen and the use of modern technologies in the stories. As I don't really know the original stories, I don't make the connections or see all the references, nor can tell how much is faithful or not to the Conan-Doyle originals.
