  • What is on your 'must grow' list please?

I am drawing up my wish list of what I want to grow this year - if you were new to gardening what would you definitely not want to leave off of your list?

But this year leave off Celery, chard.

New potatoes and chives are a must for me.
      Also peas and French beans.

What are you thinking of growing Corris?

oh it's a big list! And I haven't even LOOKED in the catalogues yet...

Garlic and Rhubarb (already bought and rhubarb planted)
herbs (sage/mint/bay/thyme already growing) basil and coriander hopefully
        Potatoes
        leeks
        peppers
        tomtao
        spring onion
        runner bean
        cauliflower
        courgette - yellow and green
        carrot
        parsnip
        broad bean
        asparagus
        strawberry
        lettuce
        brussel sprout
        cabbage
        purple sprouting
        broccoli
        marrow
        sweetcorn
        spinach
        beetroot

and I was going to grow chard - why is that on your 'not list', can I ask?

Oh, and I've got an apple and a pear tree, and raspberry and loganberry and gooseberry bushes, two fig trees and a grape vine.

Some may not get done this year though - I wont' be able to make my asparagus bed until next year. OH wants to grow cauliflower because his dad couldn't (I've never heard such daft reasoning - oh, I'll grow that because it's really difficult...)

And, as I go through catalogues I keep finding things I really want to have a go at - there was something last night that looked like a sweet pea and had a tri-pod thing left behind that you cooked whole at about 1.5 inches long. I want to grow sweet peas and nasturtiums too.

        I am an ambitious girl

Here's a neat trick to get good supply of Basil. - Buy a little plant from Sainsbury's / Tesco etc., - pot it on to a 5" or so pot. It will grow into a nice big plant in a few week. Then, at regular intervals take off a few (3 or 4) sprigs, put the in a jar of water until you see the roots forming, then pot up in the usual way, and you have another plant, and another, and another.....!

We usually make one purchased plant last a year (Sorry Sainsbury)

I am keen on climbing beans. Last year I grew, "Bridgwater" and "Cherokee Trail of Tears" climbing French beans (both heirloom varieties) and "St George" runners.

This season I am going to try "Poletschka" from Ukraine and probably "Moonlight" runners.

Thankyou Paul - I've seen those - why do you want to grow them? For taste? Or look?

Why do I want to grow them curiosity, I will never know if they taste good until I try.

My "must haves" each year are tomatoes (we use a lot of them), squash (we eat a lot of them) and the its my nice to haves..

This year I plan on growing mostly the veg we use though. But def, each year is the toms and squash.

See, that's the wrong question: when I was new, I would've said "soya beans, outdoor tomatoes and scorzonera".

Now that I'm "old", I will say: grow what you want to eat, any nothing else

Well, we eat a lot of winter squash. I grew crown prince the year before last- I was blown away by the taste- we had it for Xmas dinner. They store incredible well if properly cured, many taste almost nutty. We also eat a lot of butternut squash- I've failed to grow these though.

This year I'm growing red kuri (small), crown prince (medium), a few similar ones to CP- 'Japanese Heirloom' (American variety), harlequin and a small bush type who's name slips my mind at the mo!

There are loads of types in the virtual seed parcel mentioned above. Put your name down, and come the new year you'll be able to see the selection

I have grown chard - got it free as part of my gyo subscription, but didnt really know what i was doing and when it would be ready to pick (my first season of growing!). I grew spinach which was nice and tended to cook the spinach and chard together.

I have ordered most of my seeds via the father in laws allotment club so got them really cheap!

                            i will also be growing:-
cabbage - only a couple this year and plant them earlier
cauliflower - as was not sucessfull this year
                            peppers - chilli and normal
                            onions- red, white and spring
                            leeks
                            carrotts - lots
beets - fingers crossed they turn out better than last year
parsnips - but not to lift them to early
                            lettuce
pots - hopefully get more than a handful
strawbs - hopefully my plants will produce some fruit next year (as do my gooseberries bushes and blackcurrant bushes)

am thinking of getting a small polytunnel but not so sure as yet, as i have small greenhouse, but have a small garden. Deffo putting in a 4th raised bed x
