  • lotty 2

As some of you my know,I took on my first lotty in june this year, well it was a mess to say the least as it hadnt been touched in over 2 years.Just recently my lotty neighbours had to give theres up and we both contacted the council and I was given there lotty which was in really good nick. I didnt know if i should keep both on at the time, but have decided just to move next door and have one. My only worry is having read about crop rotation, how do you go about it if you dont know whats been planted previously? Or am i worrying too much about it for this next year and should i rotate the following year.

Not everyone rotates. I do but if you don't know, how can you? Are there any crops in it at the moment?

GM whilst crop rotation can be helpful its not an absolute necessity. As I sure others will confirm I wouldn't worry about it to much in the first year.

Oh and congratulations on your new improved lotty.

Disease build up to effect us, small scale non-commercial growers would take a fair few years, so don't worry about it. (You can have a look for Bob Flowerdew's information on that if you google it).

It's a great time now to plan your new plot, or just plan what you're going to grow if you're going to do a mix and match/intercropping jobby.

Just enjoy it, I used to get hung up about rotation, but I've had to grow the same family in the same bed in the same season a couple of times, and it's always been fine. Depending on what sort of state the plot is in, now would be a good time to get your winter prep done (manure/compost/mulching etc).
