Anyone tried these for tomatoes?I'm particularly interested to learn whether watering is more of an issue than with standard pots.

I suppose it depends how thick the air is and whether it's strong enough to hold water. Then if holding on to the water is not a problem evaporation could be. I'm interested to see how you get on.

I think they were mentioned back when beechgrove had it on.. two ticks.

Edit: http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...airpots-2.html not much info on usage though.

Chris, I had already looked at that earlier thread but big thanks for taking the trouble to look back. I actually visited Beechgrove earlier in the summer and saw the pots in use then ,but not having an immediate interest in them didn't ask about potential watering problems. It's my better half who wants to try them and has asked for some for xmas if they are suitable but I have to find out if that is the case first. Dog always gets blamed when something goes wrong

i have not used them on tomatoes as of yet.
but i have used them on my cacti and a chilli.
i think they are good, but you have to pack the air holes with soil or else they don't work properly.
with my chilli plant i let it dry out all the time, and when this happened it was a pain to rehydrate.
then i just dipped the pot for a couple of mins. when the roots were really strong on the bottom i sliced a grow bag open then let it grow in to that, probably defeats the object but hay

been looking on the web about these, someone has drilled a lot of holes in a black bucket,to emulate the ones in the originals,so you got smooth sides instead of the egg box look,i wonder if it would work just as well, what you think
sigpicAnother nutter ,wife, mother, nan and nanan, love my growing places, seed collection and sharing, also one of these

I think the originals are engineered to encourage the roots to travel outwards and by the time they get there it's too late to turn back.

They are just ugly. But I'm still interested to see how anybody gets on with them. Are they only made in black?

Haven't seen any other colours and being black, they will very much absorb heat. If watering is an issue, that can only make it worse I think but time will tell unless someone already knows.

If you keep them watered or even a tray underneath watering is not a problem.
I must admit they do work, as I have had a pear tree in one which fruits every year.
I would show you the root ball but have finally transplanted it up the allotment a couple of month back.
I have a bonsai training in the back garden which has been growing for a couple of years, what did you want to know?
I will see if I can get some photos up.
