  • Recession hits farming!

Farmers are being hit by the economy down turn now. Not being able to afford a combine and two tractors, they have to find other ways to manage the harvest now.

Yes, clearly intended as a joke. On the serious side, Agriculture has been in recession in the UK since the onset of the BSE outbreak. This was followed by the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001 which was a catastrophic disaster. All Compounded of course by European partners refusing to reinstate imports of British Beef long after the all clear was given. Our farmers are also having to contend with being squeezed by the supermarkets who don't care if they force their suppliers out of business so long as their own obscene profits are maintained.

Better stop or I'll have to permanently base myself in the rants page.

I used to work on a farm, and the last recession did hit him quite hard, hence I no longer work there!

I think the figure is something like 80% of farmland is controlled by 20% of farmers (it might be worse than that) the other 80% have been struggling (in varying degree) ever since the 80s, probably longer. BSE hit hard, the 2 foot-and-mouth outbreaks (caused by carelessness in a laboratory) made it worse.
Imported foodstuffs (especially animal-derived ones) are making matters worse, and the supermarkets can dictate what a small farmer gets for his produce (typically, not enough).

Yes, small farmers are shrinking and going, big farmers are doing well. Which is a shame, the smaller farmers are generally much more friendly.
We have very little livestock round here now, much more money in cereals.
