  • Electricity Bill, how much is yours?

I know its a bit personal to ask, but I'm sure I'm getting done by Eon who supply my electricity.

I'm paying £66 per month by D/d and will usually have to add to that at the end of the quarter. This is too much, what do you think?

Two of us out at least 5 days per week at work. The ONLY things which stay on all the time are the fridge freezer [medium size] and a small upright freezer. Nothing on stand by. no immersion heater ever on. 7kw electric shower which we both use each day. 2 energy saving out side lights. We sit in the dark in the eves with only the tv on & do not leave lights switched on if they are not being used.

If your heating is gas I would say that is way too much. We are in a small 3 bed semi with 2 grown up daughters still at home (electric showers!!!!). If your not using electric for heating your costs don't fluctuate much throughout the year. Currently paying £40 monthly dd but in credit by a significant amount which they will send me back. Do you know your tarrif?

+1 for check your tarrif, ive just changed to their latest online tarrif, we have a 2 bed bungalow, I work full time 6 days a week, OH works two days, the rest of the time she's home with the nipper, telly on radio, washing machine etc etc. we are now paying £72 per month for gas and elec but are normally £80-£100 in credit when the bill comes in.

I just had my bill come through. It was £67.50 for the quarter. I have 10 solar panels, 2 water heaters and a heat source pump! My should be around £20 a month ish. My supplier is southern electric but I am going to change to see if I can get it even cheaper. There is no gas in our village so it either kerasin or Electric.

I'm with southern electric too but am changing to Co-op energy because I work for them so will get a discount. They are generally a company with good ethics. Will find out the tariff.

Check out this website Co-operative Energy - the alternative electricity and gas supplier

I don't work for Co-op energy I work at the local Co-operative convenience store at the top of our road. Nothing in it for me to tell anybody about it I just think it might be worth checking out for some people. Personally I think the privatisation of utilities was a mistake. Might have a rant somewhere!

My last quarterly bill was £67.48, but I have gas heating and cooker, so a combined quarterly bill of about £157. My aged parent (93) lives with me so the heating is turned up pretty high as she feels the cold now, and when I'm at work she has either TV or radio on most of the day. I don't pay by D/D since I resent someone else having free use of my money - I'd rather keep it in the bank and get what miniscule offerings pass for interest these days.

Edit: forgot to say - electric from EON, gas British Gas

We pay 80 quid a month, DD, duel fuel from scottish power.. i do it all online.
We live in a small 3 bed detached house quite high up and gets lots of cold winds from the west.
We are at home 24/7 and often have one of the grandkids stopping.
I put power saver lights in a few years ago and have never needed to buy any as they all want to give us to we wrinkleys for free.
At the mo its gas cooking and a 3 year old gas c/h boiler with immersion back up.

I have spent the last 45 minutes trying to work out my annual consumption with southern electric but it's impossible because the bills overlap as in 4 bills cover 13th Feb 2010 to 11th May 2011. the only answer is to take your own readings every month on the same day or near enough. Like we haven't got enough to do! I am due another bill in the next week and have already sent the readings in. Until then I won't know if moving to another supplier will pay off and even then variations in the weather conditions will throw up inconsistencies. The more I think about it the more I think we are all being screwed.

                  What does everybody else think?

I would say that is over the top if you have gas heating.

Check your tariff and your meter.

If your meter is a modern one it is very easy to do. You have an immersion heater which will be rated at
3Kws per hour. Start with your hot water cylinder cold, switch everything electric off and make a note of the meter reading. Switch on the immersion on for half an hour and then take the reading again. If at this stage your have any doubts ask your supplier to install a test meter.

We heat by gas, bottled as no mains supply around here. We have never used the immersion and we don't have any portable or any other sort of electric heating.

Our meter looks ancient. Good idea about asking for a test meter. Would I get a calibration certificate, one must surely exist!!!!!!!!!!!!

Minskey if your meter is that old I would certainly ask for it to be checked you will probably find that when they see how old it is they will change it anyway.
