  • How much?

Olympic hero to offer 1,000 allotments in East Lancashire (From Lancashire Telegraph)

You would have to grow a lot of stuff to afford a plot here.

Tee He he - that would make people grow all year round. No empty plots all winter there.

                      Con artist.

1000 x £50 sign up =£50K probably non refundable, so more 50 squids to come later.

                      1000 x £25 per month =£25K x 12 =£300K per annum.

All on a 30 acre plot with very little work. Any farmer would give his right arm for that sort of money.

Just another money grabber jumping on the GYO wagon.

"Due to the site being in greenbelt, rules and regulations will need to be adhered to. Currently we can only offer a plot of land for growing fruit and vegetables only. We will be unable to allow the building of sheds or any other structures therefore all members need to ensure that they comply with these rules."

I know I don't have an allotment but even I know that a potting/tea/coffee shed is obligatory on one.

Seriously though, what a greedy, money grabbing person. I can only hope that his venture is a complete flop.

Expect this man to go far in Government. His plan hits the headlines, no-one criticises it, it looks absolutely great on paper - but it's totally impractical, based on the sponsor's desire to earn money rather than the needs of the service users, and the said market sector already hate it even before it begins !
And that's before you even factor in the fact that it may not officially be allotments - he may be planning to run it as market gardens or whatever the alternative title is that enables a landowner to dodge all the legislation regarding tenure of tenancy, responsibilities, management structure etc !
The acid test is, would he himself bother to pay all that money, not to mention the cost of tools, materiels etc, and turn up to work on a windswept, shelterless plot of ground, in all weathers ? Would he heck - I wouldn't !
There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.
