    Just need to rant sorry in advance

    We signed the paperwork 2 weeks ago for our new allotment when the site manger called to say it was ready only to discover 150+ broken fence panels at the start of our plot (Was clearly a dumping ground) we mentioned this to the site manger and she said quote "Ahh umm yer you can burn it all if you like" so we spent all of last weekend burning fence panels so was really looking forward to actually starting some work on the actual plot this weekend but Tuesday gets a phone call from Area site manger that they are getting the tractor on our plot to turn it all over again ??? (Mixed thoughts on this) however has of today this has still not been done so I phoned up to be told "Oh it may be done sometime next week" grrrrrr

    So another wasted weekend where we can't even start to do any work on our new plot so I spent the afternoon writing a letter of complaint and handed it in person to the area mangers office.

    Am I correct in thinking that when you are given an allotment all of the above works should have been done or am I missing something ??

    Sorry for the rant but I'm just so frustrated by it all.

    Hi Nigel. TBH you're lucky you're getting anything done to your allotment. When I took mine on it was shoulder high with brambles and docks.

        Nigel, I thought you said on your other thread that they'd already ploughed it twice

          Allotments really aren't run like John Lewis. They are more like ... chocolate firemen?

            Ok it's not shoulder high with brambles but we still have a million n one bramble roots sorry I shall be more detailed and precise in future.

              I don't mind them not being run like John Lewis however this is more of an Aldi standard

I mean let's face it you wouldn't let an house out to a tenant telling them it was ready but know darn well there was a kitchen to be fitted would you ?

                    Would be quite happy to refuse however I was told (Not asked) and after reading all the comments on my 1st post I think it would be better not to plough again but I was not given the option and being new I guess I thought I would keep stum.

                      To be honest, most people who get a new allotment get a derelict one. On our site the punters who already have plots get the first refusal and can give up there present plot if they so wish, and move to a better one.................meaning new starters get the carp!
                      If you've already payed the allotment rent in advance you can start planting asap on the plot and tell them to get knotted with the plough if you so desire.

                        Not much chance or our plots getting ploughed before they're relet ...the tractor wouldn't fit through most of the gateways....
                        If you've paid the rent then its yours to get on and start working cos the only way to get rid of those weeds etc is to do exactly that .....I mean its not like someone else is going to get it planted up and then tell you its ready

                          If it's been ploughed twice, I can't see what good ploughing it again is going to do. I'd get cracking digging those roots out, a meter at a time, and get it planted up, sown with green manure or covered as you go to stop weeds germinating over winter. Start a compost heap. Pile the roots up somewhere and burn them all on bonfire night.

                            I totally agree with 99% of comments however nobody has addressed the fact we had to deal with 150+ fence panels this taking all weekend up or is it just us who feel this wasn't our job ?

                              I agree Nigel, the fence panels shouldn't have been yours to deal with, but... with allotments it certainly helps to 'just get on with it' kind of attitude. At least you'll have plenty of ash to use as fertiliser?
                              I was lucky to get my plot ploughed when I first got it, and I think if I hadn't, I wouldn't have made it through the year. Having said that, there's not one available plot on our allotment that is in any other condition than derelict. That's kinda part of the challenge I think.. and the smugness once you've turned it around
