  • I need reassurance.

I'm heading to the dark side, and am in the process of buying an Apple Mac as I'm so fed up of my laptops not working after a couple of years.
I've done a bit of research, and everything tells me that they dont get virus'ed, they are very quick and last for ages.
Please, Mac owners, tell me this is so?

I'm not buying new as they are incredibly expensive, but am giving Ebay a severe grilling.

My sister-in-law has one and swears by it. I would get one if my pockets were deep enough

I'm not posting an answer in case I incriminate myself! OK, go for it - blame Andrea, I did!

Yes they are quick & not prone to getting bogged down over a period of time like PC's (main due to them not having a messy registry system)
Do you "do" gaming? (games are very limited & clunky)
Do you use any apps/software that will only run in windows ? (you can by a basic windows environment to run on a Mac it is chuffing expensive)

Bearders, I'm a grown up, I dont play games, *hides from all adult gamers.

I only really use my laptop to take to work and back to access the internet. After a couple of years, whatever laptop I use will just start not to work properly. I can often type on here, or on Msn or Bookface when talking to folk, and it freezes. Anything from just a split second to minutes. So frustrating.
Everything that I want to keep are kept on external hard drives.
I also have absolutely no idea if I have apps/software that will only work on Windows, that sort of knowledge is well above mine.

                You will love it.

We have 2. An imac [the harddrive is fitted in the base of the screen so no box - neat huh?] and my macbook. Macbook comes everywhere with us, if on hols etc. No bugbears, no viruses, no problems. Bought windows for mac from student software for £30 which makes 99% of things compatible. You can press a button and covert everything to pdfs without any additional software.

It's sometimes quicker to drive home, do what needs doing on mine, and drive back to work the speed my work machine [desktop pc - windows based] works at some days. Hence working from home at least one day a week.

                          Everything wot Zaz says above.
We got our first Mac more than 3 years ago (MacBook Air) which is mainly used by hubbie. Very fast, copes with all sorts of downloads, photo storage and even being dropped from a small height (whoops). Comes on holiday with us everywhere as it's small enough for hand luggage.
Then when I left work last year I got a MacBook Pro - 17 inch screen, so great for desk-work. Never had a virus problem with either of them. I downloaded OpenOffice freeware for them both - mimics Windows programmes (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and you can save them as Windows or PDF, or lots of other versions so that non-mac/openoffice peeps can open them.
Not sure how much of a saving you get but Apple sell reconditioned Macs on their site - might be worth a look.

Bob, just a bit of a curve ball, but have you considered Th'iPad? Lighter than a laptop, cheaper than a MacBook and does those things you need to do.

Takes a bit of a mind-leap in terms of what it does and how it does it, but that's all we use ours for.

Will be honest big fella, not given it a thought.
I'm going to reinforce my total computer ignorance, but is Ipad Windows based or does it have a different operating system? My real issue is that my current lappies (no matter which model) have all been Windows os and they have all only really lasted a couple of years before starting to give me grief.
If its not Window's I'd certainly give it a look, but I'm fed up of paying a reasonable sum of money for something that doesnt do what I want 2 years later.
From all that I've read, Apple stuff seems to last a lot longer, no viral issues and not doing exactly what this flippin thing is doing right now and just freezing as I'm trying to type.
