  • New Rayburn tomorrow!!!!!

Well for 8 years I cooked on this:

A lovely solid fuel stove which did all our hot water, heating and cooking during the 9 colder months of the year.

For the summer I would spread the cooking over a large gas barbeque and a little electric stove which was fine. The water was heated using an immersion heater and on cooler, damp days we were able to light the wood burner in the lounge. Then back in April our poor old Rayburn gave up the ghost, developing a repairable hole (and yes I do mean repairable), in what turned out to be an totally inaccessible and therefore expensive (engineers etc) part of its' structure and so we had to decide what to do.

After much head scratching and number crunching we came to the conclusion that, taking into account the cost of getting gas into the cottage, new combi boiler and additional plumbing (not to mention the fact that the Russians control the gas mains )we opted for a replacement Rayburn.

And so, after months of cooking on the barbeque and this:

Finally 'D' (for delivery) day is almost upon us and I am so excited.

Poor old OH is plain exhausted though, after having to spend the last 2 days, in the spider infested attic, installing a new copper header tank and miles of copper pipe for overflows and the like because, since our original Rayburn was installed (a zillion years ago) the Health and Safety era has come upon us and, apparently, our old plastic header tank was no longer deemed safe for use with a solid fuel stove (risk of melting due to extreme heat apparently - glad I wasn't aware of that every night for the last decade I've slept under the thing ) and the same for the plastic overflow.

Will hopefully be posting pics of my new stove tomorrow or Wednesday and be able to cook in my warm, dry, wind free kitchen by the weekend

    RP,

Glad to see someone gave you good advice about you plastic tank.

You may remember seeing on the news 2/3 years ago about a young girl (in Somerset I think) who was scalded to death in bed when the tank above failed. That was due to poor installation practice but with solid fuel appliances better safe than sorry.

Good luck with your new cooker.

I'm extremely envious, I've always wanted a rayburn or Aga. We'll all be round at weekend to help you celebrate your new one

I cried when my 'Clary' arrived! she is a claret coloured similar cooker and I love her to bits, took years to save up for, and I still guard her. I hate it when we turn her off for a service, absolutely love the warmth she gives off - this morning it was cold.....but as the kettle went on, I had time for a snuggle up to get warm.....bliss. As I type I guess she is keeping Sebbie cat warm, drying out my chilli peppers and keeping the cold at bay! what a treat to come home to in the winter!!!
Reetnproper, take some pics for us please.
Happy days !! what colour will it be?

I'm officially jealous. I have a Rayburn in my house that doesnt work (if anyone wants it come and get it) but I really really really do want to get one at home.

Headfry, it's another British Racing Green one as our kitchen colours were all based around the old one and the Reetlets have decided to name it Bess.

Well the builders and heating guys came this morning and took the old stove out, repointed the chimney and capped/netted (2 of each) the chimney pots, put down the new liner and installed the new blanking plate. Due to a misunderstanding the new stove didn't arrived today but, to be fair, as it took them 1.5 hrs to navigate the old stove from the kitchen, through the house, over the gravel drive and onto the back of their trailer, that probably isn't such a bad thing .

We're waiting for the heating company to let us know when the stove will be installed but it's looking like Thursday or Friday but at least the chimney is now no longer in danger of collapsing into the bedrooms (apparently the chimney pots were the most stable part of the whole stack )

                Oh well, not long now.

Glad to hear you're all safe Reet. I am sure Bess will arrive to a very hearty welcome. Like Bren says, it'll be worth the wait.

Oh Reet I remember the awful waiting game, thought the day would never come.....but it sure did! Clary changed colour as she came up to running temperature - I remember that well! and reading the cookery book that came with her, I even had to learn where to bake a potato!!!! I just love my stove. It does soooo many jobs other than cook, wet suits dry in a night, tents dry in hours, gently warms my honey so that it flows through the strainers. warms wax to make candles.....and the list goes on!
We have a small micro wave but its hardly ever used. No other cooker! Mine is an oil fired one- if the power goes out...I can still cook!!!
I am so excited for you...keep me posted please - I look forward to some pictures of Bess!

                          Bearders,
I've looked at all sorts of cookery type stuff, including the above, and I havent seen anything that looks like a Rayburn. They just look beautiful, I thought the Cornue's were too angular and boxy. (Just my opinion of course.)

Sadly Bess wont be here until NEXT Friday now but on a positive note, OH has decided to clean and then paint the dark, soot ingrained bricks which were behind the old Rayburn, to help brighten up the kitchen and he now has 4 whole days of his holiday to do more essential repair work to Annie .

Also the lovely builder who was repointing the chimney and installing the pot covers (all part of the install prep organised by the Rayburn suppliers), repointed the slipped tile and channel work around middle Reetlets, arched window casement (it's the pointed bit of roof that sits in the main roof if you see what I mean)

for free, as he was already up there. Middle Reetlet was thrilled as her roof had started to leak a few days ago, during a particularly heavy downpour and she had got quite upset by it all. Some people are just so kind and generous with their time and skill. He and his mate have done a lovely job of the chimney as well.
