Can you fill in your location in your profile?

Do you know the variety and rootstock?
    How large is it?

Does it have any new shoot growth? (it would be a sign that it still has some vigour and could be salvageable).

The "gel" could be a sign of canker, or simply bark damage - perhaps even due to frost damage.

Assuming that the "gel" is due to canker, would it be possible to cut out the diseased parts, or is the trunk too badly infected? (infected trunk is a bad sign).
    .
