    ebony blackcurrant

    Hi,
    Does anyone else grow an ebony blackcurrant?
    I got one as the catalogue said they were the sweetest for eating fresh (I can't stand cooked fruit!) this is the first time it's fruited - I tried some that looked ripe (black on the outside - green on the inside, not sure if that's ripe or not) and I swear they taste of chicken. They're really not pleasant, just wondered if I've tried them too early or if this is the best they're going to get

      I have an ebony bush and it tastes like a sweeter blackcurrant!! Very good and i would recommend it.

        It's pretty early for blackcurrents. It's either not ripe or genetically modified.

          Chicken? I hope not. I'm growing an ebony but won't have any berries til next year. I don't fancy waiting 2 years for chicken flavoured fruit lol.

            hehe - no I'm not, my mum tried one too and agreed with me. Right so hopefully it's just that they're not quite ripe then (either that or I've got weird taste buds!)

              Well, i picked the one seemingly ripe blackcurrant i had growing and took a bite. I wouldn't say it was quite chicken-y but i know what you mean. This one was green in the middle too so i'd say it wasn't quite ripe either. It's kind of put me off blackcurrant a little now lol

                I do not pick my blackcurrants untill they are almost ready to fall off. You need to net your bush to prevent the birds getting them.

                  I've got some ebony, and i've certainly tasted the chickeny-ness as well. Birds have had them now as it's only the first year and I didn't bother to net. I'd be interested to hear if yours improve when they ripen further as I'm wondering whether to replace with something more suited to my climate.

                    I've got Ebony and they taste like blackcurrants but won't be ready round here until latish July. Never tasted one early and prefer them cooked anyway so can't comment on the chicken thing - very strange

                    Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

                      I planted one last year,it had f currants but the birds got them so i didn't get to try them.This year i covered it with a net few weeks ago and managed to pick a few over weekend(they were very soft and ripe)they tasted a little bland for fresh fruit but i like it and prefer it fresh, i can't say they tasted of chicken.

                        I don't think mine are quite ripe yet but I had a taste today and they're certainly starting to taste a lot more fruity now (bit like an unripe gooseberry) - still a slight hint of chicken but I think it should go
