Too late to add growpots to tomatoes in bags?

    Too late to add growpots to tomatoes in bags?

    My tomatoes were planted out about a fortnight ago in growbags and are currently all around a foot high. However having read that they may need a bit more depth and that watering should be from the bottom/feeding from the top, I've ordered some of these:

    My question is, is it too late to slip these over the top and fill with compost a couple of inches at a time as they grow? What should I do (or should I just wait for next year and hope for the best this year)?

    I fit mine at time of planting but you could slip these over CAREFULLY and put in compost as new roots will be put out by the plant if buried. I use the deeper ones and harder plastic that keep year after year. They are a bit more price wise than the ones shown (12.99 for 3). I have also cut the bottoms off a Morrisons flower bucket this year and sunk those into growbags as I have sown way too many plants again.

      Thanks for the reply, so should I just sit them on top rather than push them into the soil and gradually bury the leaves as the plants grow until I'm at the top of the pot?

        I have never used these being a bucket person myself.

        However if you can slide them over the plant without damage to the foliage I would do that, then gentle ease them into the bag a short way. When in place if the inner chamber can be topped up without burying the plant then do that.

        The stuff that looks like white hairs on the plant stem will turn into roots when buried and give you a much stronger plant.

          Push them into your growbag and put compost around tomato stem filling the pot and you will bury some leaf. The tomato will make additional roots. Water in the reservoir which will drip into growbag compost. Feed through pot rather than reservoir.

            I have some this year for the first time. My toms only went in them last week but I am finding that the feed pot is quite small capacity wise and drys out ever so quickly. I am sure the soil and growbag compost below is ok but the drying out worries me. I am now watering most days.

            Anyone had similar problems or am I worrying unduly?

            Retro fit if careful!
