  • Sowing carrot seed question

I've opened my packet of carrot seeds and they are tiny! Is there a tried and tested way of sowing them so that I don't end up with all 300 (the entire half teaspoonful) all in one row?

I had a practice go sprinkling them along a sheet of paper between finger and thumb, but still ended up with lots of seeds close together.

if it was me sowing them they wouldnt grow how ever many i put in.....................i've just sown a third row of carrots this year...last two disappeared without trace.....sprinkle them as evenly as you can and thin out later.

Some people say you can mix the carrot seed with sand to thin them out - I've not tried this out tho!

Get a pair of tweezers and sow your seed one at a time.

Or, if that doesn't float your boat, sow as thinly as possible and thin out later

It works using sand, but you still have to thin then out.

I tip some seeds into my hand, then put a pinch back in the packet. Then another pinch back, if necessary. Then take the seeds a tiny pinch at a time in my finger & thumb, kind of roll them around so that only a few drop out at a time: at 3" intervals

Doesn't even run the flag up the jackstaff, Maccabee! I read somewhere that you can thin them by snipping off the extras with scissors, but doesn't that attract carrot fly just the same as pulling?

I like this idea. So I need to work out how much seed to do a row, then mix in the sand? Does it have to be just a little sand, or will the seeds be happy if there's lots of sand in the row?

If you have carrot fly in your area, they will find your carrots whether you nip or snip, at night-time or dawn

Sow a small pinch every 3 inches. Let them grow. Pull the biggest one. Eat it. Leave the rest to grow on

                  Small pinches it is then.
