  • Just a beginner but wanted to share....

...what I've done so far! I don't know maybe someone can pick up some tips or make suggestions I'm trying to put plenty of photos on my blog if anyone wants to see.

In my first year I am growing the following:
3 varieties of spuds. Bambino baby, Nicoles, Nadines
    Dwarf French Beans
    Plum tomatoes
    Strawberries
    Cucumbers
    Radishes
    Rocket
    Lettuce
    Spring Onions
    Chillis
    Mixed peppers
    Carrots
    Courgettes

I am doing my potatoes in both planters but also I have been using the empty compost sacks as well, rolling down the edges (to roll up again with each layer of compost I add). I've heard that the black plastic is really good for insulating the spuds and helping them grow.

At my local garden centre, people recycle their pots. I got some small in diameter but quite deep ones and am growing spring onions in these, just enough per pot for one meal or 'harvest' each time before resowing.

I have found that the dwarf beans are shooting up the best of everything in my very hot conservatory!

I have been using peat pots and then repotting when the roots start to poke through the bottom. They tend to go a bit damp and mouldy but that's fine because you don't have to disturb the plant to repot, just stick the whole thing in! Next year I'm going to make my own from newspaper and contribute to the recycling effort.

I was buying vegetable compost but then read multi-purpose is just as good so I've just been mixing in a bit of FB&B and some slow release food pellets.

Instead of buying plastic pot saucers I've been using the foil takeaway tubs you can buy in large packs from the pound shop. They help reflect the light as well.

Steve Brookes (my new personal hero) says that vacuum cleaner dust is great food for tommies. I will definitely be giving this a go.

I started my carrots off indoors and then also sowed some outdoors to see if there'll be any difference.

I was given some hydroglobes for Xmas and currently have one for each courgette plant. Seems to be working really well to direct water straight into the roots during the hot days we've been having. They release water periodically. Super clever.

I think that's it for now. I'm really enjoying reading everyone's posts on here.

Thanks Francesbean, we shall see! I never thought I'd be welcoming bees into my conservatory when I bought the house, far from it, I used to see them as an annoyance. How things change.

Good luck to you too... will have a peek at your blog.

Hello chitfaced, I too am new to growing my own veg this year and am enjoying experiencing the highs and lows so far! Although my boyfriend and my dear next door neighbour think I am a tad NUTS to be so consumed by seeds and plants I am enjoying it immensely as it is giving a positive focus at a time when other things in life are less than perfect!
I just checked out your blog and really love your style and humour
