  • Wisteria advice please;

    I have introduced myself this morning, but am about to move (let's hope soon!) to a new property with a garden from my flat.

    We have here, on our building, a wisteria which I'd like to take a cutting from to grow onto a pergola (sp?) in our new garden which is hot, sunny, and south facing.

    Firstly, how do I take a cutting, would now be an ok time to do that - and what do I plant it in?

    Secondly when I get to the new property, should I keep it in a pot, or plant it into the ground?

    The plant here is enormous, and rampant, I'm not sure how you keep it in check and prevent it from taking over the entire back of the property.

    Last month my mum cut her huge Wisteria right back. She came across one branch that had roots on where it touched the ground, cut it off, wrapped it in wet kitchen roll and a plastic bag and brought it over here a couple of days later. We planted it straight away, and it already has new shoots forming

      We had a lovely one at our previous place. Look for a runner near the ground (there are probably several) and check to see if there's one that has touched the ground and rooted. If not, peg one down and cross your fingers. Probably won't root in the time you have, but could be worth a try!

      Good luck!

        Layering probably best. Professionally they are grafted, but you may get some joy from cuttings. Don;t bother with seed - grown from seed it usually takes a lifetime to flower!

          do you think they would do ok in big pots? This one is a a master plant and has only been in about three years - I don't think I want that much!
