  • Chilly chillies.

I started a few chillies (and sweet peppers too) in a flat a few weeks ago.

Today I pricked them out and put them into pots but it occurs to me that I don't have anywhere warm to keep them. I've got a blow-away greenhouse up against the house but being unheated I wonder if it will be enough before the last frost has passed. Eventually they'll be in a little (glass) greenhouse so their future is bright... I just want to make sure they reach their future.

Now they are in pots there's no way I'll get away with the kitchen window. Am I going to have to bring them indoors each night or should they manage OK in the plastic-fantastic greenhouse?

I don't think that overnight in a plastic greenhouse will be warm enough for them - particularly given your location. Even if there's not a frost, the lower overnight temps will definitely check their growth.
I think you may need to bring them inside each evening for the time being. Another option might be laying fleece over them at night, but you'd still be risking losing them.

If you leave them out all night, oop north, at this time of year, they'll at best sulk, slow down and might not produce much. At worst the cold will kill em. My placcie is getting down to 4 degreecs C at the mo, but there's stil time for it to get much colder. 4degrees is too cold for chillies. They really will not be impressed. I'm afraid you're going to have to do what we do and take em out in the morn and in at night if you really can't fit them on your windowsills. It's a right PITA but not much else you can do really.

          Wonderful.
Two trays of chillies up and down two flights of stairs twice daily.

I'd say "at least it will keep me fit" but I've already got that part covered!

Thanks for the replies. There's no way I'm risking losing these. I had a terrible time with peppers last year. Almost nothing germinated and those that did didn't fare too well. This time I've got a good few seedlings (30 in all) - though the fancy hybrid purple ones (Purple Beauty) had a pitiful germination rate - but I'm taking extra care to be sure I don't have another pepper-less year. Not without some sort of calamity anyway.

Shady - it's the "time for it to get much colder" which made me post this thread. It's been a lovely warm day today but I know there's probably still some bitter weather between now and summer so I wanted to be on the safe side.

Like yourself, i too live Ooop North. Was about to ask the same question.
As this is my 1st real year of veg growing! Never grown Peppers before, and did not want to lose em, i was really chuffed when i got home tonight and found such a reach for the sky growth of them. So tomorrow am out with the
pots, and re-pot em, it's been really warm these past few days, but temp has dropped at night, so will be sure to bring em in at teatime.

Why not keep them downstairs. We put some in the kitchen and some in the dining room. Not exactly aesthetically pleasing, but this is just something you have to accept when you get into this growing lark - that is, your house will only be clean and tidy for 25 percent of the year

I value my life more than I value ease of growing.

I can just aboutget away with the odd flat or windowsill propagator. 30 chilli plants and whatever else needs the ol' in-out-in treatment would be more than I can hope to get away with.

Just brought them in again in case I don't get a chance later. It's not SO much hassle (but then, they aren't in big pots yet).

My glass gh is still 4c at night, much too cold for chillies. Mine are on-and-off the windowsills every day. It's tedious, but necessary

How warm should it be before it's safe to evict the chillies from the house altogether and put them in a greenhouse?

I've put mine in the GH, along with a heater set for 10 degrees. Is this still too cold for them?

No, minimum 10C is fine (but any colder and they will change to sulk mode, which they will take some time to get back out of)
