  • Blackcurrant pruning advice please

    Hi
Am a fruit and veg newbie so am looking for lots of advice over the next few months!
I cut out all the branches which bore fruit, (much easier to pick the fruit) last year so do I need to do any further pruning?
    Thanks

It's recommended that approximately one third of the old growth is pruned out annually. As Blackcurrants fruit on old wood, you may have over done it a bit but you will still get fruit from last years growth.

Blackcurrants produce fruit on last years growth so removing all the fruiting stems from last year should do no harm, indeed in days of yore, this was how the fruit was harvested - whole branches would be taken into the kitchen and the berries removed there.
The only other pruning that may need done is to open up the bush or for cosmetic reasons should you so wish.
