  • What soft fruit will grow in full shade?

Hi everybody, hope somebody can help , i have a walkway between my garage and a high edge, can any soft fruit be grown in containers? At the moment the containers are planted with Honeysuckle and they are thriving, the containers are in full shade all day. regards Mick.

Alpine strawberries would be my number one choice.

You say that your honeysuckle is thriving - are you sure that it isn't just going mad, desperately trying to reach the light?

If something is growing in containers, you could occasionally move the containers to a sunny spot.

      Gooseberries would be possible.

Just bought some blueberries, and the research I did seemed to suggest they don't mind shade.

My blueberries have been growing - for several years - in a spot that only gets a few hours of sun per day. "Three quarters shade" would be a fair description.
I have to grow them this way because the soil is quite sandy and we don't get much rain, so the partial shade helps keep the ground moist for longer.

I have an old book that suggests red currants for full shade, I have an area like this and have planted some this year to give it a go. Obviously not much will thrive in shade but I have a border completely in shade and have heard good things about sorrell (particularly red/blood sorrell) and jeruselum artichokes in shade not exactly fruit but it may open your options a little
