    Fig Tree Advice

    Hi

    sent my hubby to wilko's to buy a new blowaway for me, and asked him to have a look in the veg section and find me something interesting, he came back with a fig tree!!

    Looking for care and advice on these, Has anyone grew them before?

    How long before it fruits?

      Don't plant it in a pot that's too big for it, they love to be root bound. If your planting it in the garden make sure you restrict it's roots. Mine took 5 years before I got any figs that were big enough to eat. If at all possible put it up against a South facing wall/fence, that way it'll benefit from the heat the wall radiates through the night after a sunny day. At the moment mine looks like sticks in a pot, but there's lots of figlets on it so I'm hopeful of lot's of figs this year.

        I was going to post a similar thread... I've a fig, probably 1.5' high, in maybe a 2L pot? Small anyway... was going to plant it in my garden, but not sure how large a hole I should line with slabs.. I'd like it to get reasonably large, maybe 3-4' wide? similar in height? Or would a sunken pot do best with a gravel lined base of the pot + hole for drainage?

          If it's a Brown Turkey it's fairly hardy, but you should ensure it is in a south facing sheltered position. I wrap mine with fleece every winter. The other variety I have over winters in the orangerie.
          Mine is planted in the middle of a natural chamomile seat area with its roots restricted by paving slabs sunk into the ground. As someone else has stated, this helps constrain the roots which creates more fruits It's a nice shady spot sitting under its big leaves/

            if its a brown turkey,it will thrive as long as you keep it south facing,mine has been in a 18" tub for 3 yrs now and after -13/14 in both the last winters we had 4 great figs last year and hope for more this year,it sits by the back door,does not get fussed over in winter and is now in full bud,all we need now is a reasonable summer......
