  • Naga germination help please

I have some Naga Morich seeds from Nickys seed. (Himself is NOT gonna complain that my chillis aren't hot enough this year!)

The bumpf on the packet says "Germination is tricky and erratic, this may be improved by treating the seed with GA or potassium nitrate solution"

Anyone care to explain this to me, and tell me what to do?

    Thanks in advance

Potassium nitrate is said to break seed dormancy or to improve germination in erratic seeds. GA is Gibberellic Acid which is a plant hormone that drives plant growth. In theory the treatment would be to soak the seeds in a solution of one of these before sowing but I have no practical experience of doing so.
Hopefully someone in the know will be along with the practical advice shortly.

Seaweed solution would be an option and is recomended for assisting germination - you'd have to check the mix on the bottle, its usually a weak solution for this use.

Myself, I'd wet paper towel with seaweed solution, put it in a tub add the seeds on top and put it somewhere warm, check regulary and when you see the seedcase opening and the root coming out, place in a pot, always works for me, that is unless it's dodgy or very old seed

Jiving on down to the beach to see the blue and the gray, seems to be all and it's rosy-it's a beautiful day!

I would agree that naga seed is a little more difficult to germinate that other chilli varieties but if there aren't many seeds in the pack do as King Carrot says and pre-germinate on damp tissue paper. Otherwise chuck the seeds in a pot as normal - some will come up.

Fi, all Nicky's hotter seeds say the same thing. I found they worked just fine sowing 3 to a 3in pot and putting them in a cheap B&Q heated propagator. Good luck!
