soggy onions

No need to worry! The soggy bit will just rot away and the onion will form on the bottom of the green shoots.
The onion 'set' is just a food supply source until the onion develops its own roots and then photosynthesis takes over.
Similar to cotyledons on beans, cucumbers etc. Once the leaves start growing these shrivel and die!

Onion Question

Hi 1st time on today! Here's the question: My Autumn planted onions had settled in well & had nice green shoots, then came a bitterly cold and snowy December dumping 10" of snow. My onions still have nice green shoots but dig a little deeper and the majority are soft. Are they finished or do you think they'll recover and fatten up?

I'm guessing they're using up the goodness stored in the old bulbs so that they can produce the new (might be wrong tho')........oh and welcome to the vine

(Nah, pretty sure I was right!)

Best way of checking for rot is to lift one of the sets and look at the roots.....if they are lovely and white and fresh looking, bung it back in as theirs nowt the matter with em!

advice on winter onions

my winter onions have green shoots growing but the bulbs feel mushy is this normal?

Yep, they use up the reserves from the bulb/set
