Given that bamboo plants can be quite expensive I thought of growing some from seed. How difficult is it and what time of year is best? i have a small unheated greenhouse, is it suitable ?

To be honest, I wouldn't think it worthwhile. Have you researched where to get seeds from?

There are a lot on offer on the internet Ebay/Amazon although obviously there is a risk on he quality.

I've found it hard enough to grow small plants on (esp black bamboo). Good luck if you decide to go ahead.

Difficult if not impossible from seed. This site might inspire you: Growing bamboo in Northern UK

I know a bloke who makes a killing out of bamboo plants, he doesnt plant them by seed i dont think ever has what he done was bought 2 plants one normal one black bamboo. He then potted up tons of compost in fairly nice sized pots and just took masses of cuttings from the plants dipped the sniped part in water then some root growth stuff and potted them, he says if you take clippings it will grow like crazy if that helps you.

Buy and cut does look to be a better option, I had a feeling seeds wouldn't be easy.

I am after enough to make a long screen, so now what time of year to take the cuttings .....
