  • Carrots

I have attached a picture of my garden. It's doing quite well for how dry its been But my carrots are really poor we do water them but they are really small and got carrot fly. Even the new seed I have sown has been terrible - how are other people's carrots this year. Is it just to dry?

Mine have been rubbish, better than last year but still very very poor germination. I'm putting it down to the drought we had but who knows. One of the veterans had sporadic germination too. The earlier sown ones are doing ok but the later ones which were sown when it was hot are few and far between.

If you have carrot fly the only sure fire way to stop them is to grow under a fleece/mesh/net curtain cover. I had some sheets of voile left over from my kiddy photographing days which I sowed together to make a cage type thing. It needs some improvements but we had a couple of yellow carrots yesterday in a salad and there wasn't a trace of carrot fly.

I've had my best year ever for carrots (don't worry, my spuds are terrible).

I've had them under voile, which has now ripped to shreds in the high winds we have here on the coast.

Where are you btw? You could pop your location into your profile ...

Not tried my outdoor ones yet but the ones I sowed early in the polytunnel have been fab, far bigger than expected too. Am hoping the outdoor ones are good and not carrot flied

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

What a lovely garden VG. I sowed a row of carrots, which germinated beautifully - and every single one was grazed off by a slug/snail. Grrr. To disheartened to have a go again.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I have had real problems growing them this year after having bumper crops last year. I think it has just been so dry and I thought you weren't allowed to water them. I am now giving them a really good soak once a week if there hasn't been enough rain. I made carrot fly cages last year of enivromesh and cheap offcuts of wood which have worked really well - I just bury the sides a little way down and no sign of those beasties. Mine got aphids very badly though - reckon they can fit through the holes in the mesh.

My carrots have been rubbish this year, I've had one decent size. However I live in hope & have sowed more in a container in the greenhouse & are coming on quite nicely.

                    My Carrots

Carrots and new potatoes are the only veg (so far) I have had any success with this year (this is my first year growing veggies), everything else has been eaten by the bloomin slugs and snails. The carrots were container grown and a fair size, (I can hear all you allotment people laughing) here they are placed on top of our wheelie recycling bin. I am very proud of them

I've not had a single funny veg yet this year....but then our computer is playing up and won't let me load any pics anyway

btw...I've not had a bad year with carrots but I do tend to give the row a good soaking before sowing and once or twice a week when it's really hot and dry they get a good soaking too.
Weather like thisthough...once they're established...they get left to their own devices.
