It looks like a Clematis to me.

I'd go with clematis too ( ?alpina?)

Don't think you can eat the fruit if it is,

On second thoughts- it could be a mock orange....does it smell yummy??
Thats a shrub whereas a clematis is a climber- hence my second guess.
( gawd - I'm useless with most flowers!!!)

no idea if it even fruits!!

If it is a clematis (you say it is a shrub, though- and clematis is a climber) then the seed heads are fluffy like old man's beard which is a wild clematis.
If the flowers are sweetly perfumed it could be a Mock orange (philadelphus) but the petals look a bit long for that and the centres are too full so I go with the clematis, from the photos!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Tis definitely not philadelphus, the flowers are smaller on that.

It's a clematis. BTW, I wouldn't trust Wilko's labels: I bought a clematis like your one, but it's turned out pink. I hate pink.

Could have been worse, it could have turned out as a J. Knotweed

You're right, but I've also had mauve hyacinths (labelled white) and red anemone (labelled blue).

                grrrrrrrrr

It has 4 petals - the philadelphus has 5. Looking at the leaves I'd go for Clematis Montana.

                      That's the clematis I meant Flum ( by association I was thinking - Alpine=snow=white!!!)

It's not a clematis. It stands up with just a light bamboo supporting it & definitely doesn't climb. Also my pic isn't too clear but it's leaves have a serrated edge. It's in it's 3rd year now & is flowering off a woody stem with bushy growth coming off the base. BTW the chooks love the foliage. Took a cutting from it last year which is thriving which I don't think Clematis do.........Do they? Thanks for the information all the same.[/I]

Can't quite count the petals. Then again it's only a guess.

Is it scented Shadegrow? You didn't mention.
Hate to disagree with Flum but some Philadelphus have only 4 petals - like the one growing in my garden!
Here is another piccie to see if this helps

Well if it never climbs it won't be a montana - they go off like the clappers! If you stand still they are up your trouser leg!
Must be a philadelphus then. Mine all have 5 petals but there are lots of varieties. If it's a philadelphus it will have a stong smell, a bit lily-like.
