    Thinning out help needed, please

    I'd have thought thinning out should be straightforward ... BUT ... I should know better really

    Spring Onions - White Lisbon
    My spring onion seed packet says to thin the seedlings out to 15cm apart. WHAT???? How big are those spring onions going to be? really?

    Turnip Kaskinauris
    I've looked up my book, and it says different spacings for early v. main turnips. Can anyone help me with how far apart my HSL turnip kaskinauris should be? I don't know if they're early or main ...

    Swede Gul Svensk
    How far apart should these be thinned to?

    Woaahhh....back off from that!!!

    Just thin and eat as you you want them.
    Yes- they will be a bit crowded at first- but if plants are too close they will just be smaller BUT ..sweeter.

    Each of the swede and turnip only need 4" each max to be honest- so long as you crop them regularly...forget about the spring onions- just thin as you crop

    I hate this per cm cubed/squared stuff..if you over crop- just feed well in preperation for next time...congrats on your produce so far that you are actually concerned about overcrowding!!! ...well done you!!!

        In my experience, all two years of it! Spring onions push themselves apart anyway

          I tend to sow spring onions by scattering a pinch of seed per cell in biggish cell-trays, then just plant out the whole clump. They do push themselves apart, and you can just pull the biggest at a time leaving the rest to grow on. Don't forget to firm the soil back round the roots of the others though.

          Swedes and turnips, I just make a rough guess of how big I want the final plant to be, and leave that much space for it to grow into. With swedes, the foliage gets bigger then the root, so they'll need a bit more space.

            Well, I'm soooooooooo glad i thought to check on the vine. I'll leave my spring onions well alone, and will thin out the swede and turnip tomorrow.

              Just planted out the spring onions today that I have tried planting the way Sarswix says, never done it this way before but it looks the best way to do them....so far

                are you sure it didn't say make the rows 15cm apart? (so you can get between to weed etc)
