  • Cucumber volume

    Hi all
My first ever cucumber is now about 4 foot tall and has 4 female flowers with the cukes forming.
How many cucumbers can I expect to get from 1 plant.
I do have a second backup plant which is only 8 inches tall. I was going to put this in the composter.
I thought I best ask before I do this, just in case the 4 cucumbers showing will be the only 4 i get.

PS it is a telegraph improved cucumber

    Hi Mrs S
It all depends if your cucumber is inside or out. Cucumbers are prone to root rot no matter how careful you are, so a back up is always a good move.
You can get 20 to 30 or more cucumbers from one plant in a greenhouse if you have the room and grow them on the shoots.
I do tend to take a few of the bottom ones off to let the plant get quite tall before it starts producing.

    This your target lol.

      I wouldn't compost the backup!
You probably won't get the 20-30 per plant - although that would be wonderful!
Also home grown cukes taste so nice you will eat more than usual plus they are usually smaller than the shop bought ones. You can pickle them if you are overrun.

I usually grow 2 cucs in the greenhouse and end up with far more fruits than I could ever possibly eat and they are my main give away crop. However I'm also pretty sure that if I only grew one it would die and I'd have none

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Oh dear I have 7 plants in my growhouse thats are going mad and one in the garden that's not doing much at all.
20 to 30 times by 7 equals........... oh heck a too small growhouse that is probably not going to be able to support all the weight of all those cucs. Fingers crossed for a not so good crop or you'll be seeing me with a stall at the side of the road selling them!
Its nice to be important but its more important to be nice
