  • White picket fence plus roses...

    Hello all,

We're having a small (two foot), white, wooden picket fence put in on Friday (yay!) and I'm really looking forward to planting lots of pink miniature roses and dianthus against it, all the way around.

However, the other half is kicking up saying I can't plant them against the fence as it will loosen the fence..?

Is this true?! White picket fences are always shown with roses growing up them? Does anybody know how far away I have to plant my flowers from the fence to keep it secure or is someone telling me porkies!

I have a picket fence - not painted white mind. Roses all over parts of it. No problem.
As long as you don't plant a stonkingly strong rose like a rambler against your fence, it should not cause a problem. Unless the person putting the fence in doesn't do a good job!

I usually leave about 18" free before planting - but then I lean the plant towards the fence when putting it in. The gap is to allow for cultivation and to reduce the 'rain shadow' - the area that gets less water by a fence, wall or hedge.

I think it's a man thing. They don't 'do' pretty!

Sounds like a lovely idea and miniature roses are not likely to cause any problems, just pleasure. Enjoy.
