  • Tree fern

I think our tree fern has succumbed to the minus 16 we had in the winter,I'm guessing that as there's no growth by now it's deader.Anyone else had any problems?

Don't give up. If the middle of the plant is still dry (not mushy) keep treating it as normal. It could take some time but the chances are it will eventually throw new leaves. I've had a tree fern that took more than a year to throw new leaves after being frosted.

I have had my tree fern (only 3 ft tall) over 10 years now in a pot and I cant say it has exactly grown much (about an inch). Where am I going wrong?. I keep it right up next to the house on my patio under the pergola. It got the through the snow and ice of last winter ok and I am relieved for that.
They always amaze me with their lack of roots. Everything gets absorbed through their fronds.
          Cheers

I wrapped ours as normal with fleece and bubble wrap, but no sign of growth,it's not wet or mushy,so I'll see what happens.

Have you fed it? A little Baby Bio mix, or similar in the top of the crown, occasionally. No, I haven't either. Mine's growing very slowly in the pot I bought it in. I think you'll find that the 'trunk' is actually the root. Well, that's what I was led to believe, but I haven't 'Googled'

I'm sorry to report that both my Tree Ferns are looking lush and lovely with loads of new growth - but then we didn't have such low temperatures as you (although we did have 10" of snow).

One of ours is doing great guns and was pushing off the straw and chicken wire coat it had been wearing all winter but the other (smaller) one doesn't look so good but isn't mushy. They are very slow growing so you don't really notice an increase in height each year which is presumably why they cost so much to buy. We always give ours a good wrap up with loads of straw then fold the leaves over the top and secure with a chicken wire frame every winter. That way they won't sweat like they can in bubble wrap and it seems to work well. Both are in the border and have been there in excess of 10 years.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
