  • What to do with fresh horse manure?

    Hi

I have access to some fresh horse manure but don't know what to do with it.

The mini stable is down the road from me but next to an allotment. My plot is on a different allotment so I am actually competing with the local allotment for the manure. I plan to collect little bit (couple of compost bags) on a weekly basis.

The question is what shall I do with it once I get it to my plot? Do I cover it? Or just pile it in a corner?

    Thanks

Piled in a corner will work fine.

I've got a compost bin specially devoted to piling up with bags of fresh horse manure, just as you describe - last winter's bin is about ready to use in the middle but the edges are getting added to the main compost along with the green stuff. In the meantime I've started a new one.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I would collect it and pile it up during the summer. Then when most things are harvested, spread it and dig it in during the autumn

          Thank you for replying.

I think I will pile some up and add small amounts to the compost bin as and when I need some 'green' matter.

I've added a load to my compost bin, also dug lot's into where I plant my runner bean's they don't seem to be fussy if it's new or old poo...they just love it.
