  • which tree?

    hi all
we have a long strip of lawn at the side of our house which gets full sun. i have dug 3 island beds and have 2 planted with roses and going to put summer bedding in later. the centre one is circular and i would like a small tree
to put in it, but which one? anyone got any ideas. ideally i would like it to be slow growing and flowering, later all the beds will have spring bulbs planted in them. the soil is ok, drains well and the area gets sun for most of the day. i am totally at a loss as to which tree to buy, don't want to spend more that about £25 in case it gets nicked!!! thanks all

Rowans are lovely, and many stay fairly small. They are native, and have berries in the Autumn, which is great for birds.

Some of the small crab apples are gorgeous - I've just put a Red Sentinal in my front garden. Beautiful both in flower and in fruit.

I have done something similar in my back lawn, but have planted a dwarf apple, pear and a cherry.

The trees are only 4 foot high and full of blossom. They did say that they will only reach 5/6 foot in total. I paid £10 each for the trees.
Yesterday our local Homebase has some nice ones that was only 3 feet high and in full bloom. Labeled up as patio fruit trees for £14.

          small tree

Hey Milly. Depends what small tree means. Size does matter. Some japanese maples will take about twenty years to get to 12ft where as some rowans could be as high as a 2storey house in that time. Be careful of your neighbours and your age and your pocket, there is nothing worse than cutting down a fine tree in its prime cause it's causing grief. But do plant some thing. Look up rhs advice on net. dincur
