  • Hyacinths

Would hyacinths survive as a cut flower? I have many big, beautifully aromatic ones in my garden and they are all droopy even though I staked them. I just wondered if I could bring them indoors to enjoy the smell? Oops, forgot to use the excellent search thread.

They smell absolutely gorgeous, don't they? Only problem I can foresee is finding a vase suitable for them. Would need to be fairly heavy, and not too deep.

Hi RL, I think I'll try some kind of bowl. I wish I'd grown some in pots for the house. That's a definite for next year.

I got a couple at a car boot recently. The large bulbs are half sticking out of the pot. Is that how they normally grow? Do I plant them the same?

Yes that's how they're grown in pots BFG. When I've had pot grown ones in the past, I have enjoyed the bulbs in their bowls in the house until the flowers have died off and then completely buried the whole bulb in the garden. You can also grow them in a special hyacinth glass (shaped like an hourglass) just in water, they are fascinating to do, but you must buy a bulb that is specifically for indoors, as with indoor planting.

I seem to remember buying cut hyacinths from a florist stall in London, FF. So I guess the answer to your question is yes.
Whenever I plant out hyacinths after flowering them indoors, they turn into bluebells - not our lovely ones, just rather scraggy ones. The perfume is still there - but it is nothing like walking into a bluebell wood * drifts off into memories ...

Pardon the chat, but I have some like bluebells Jeanie, because they're ex-indoors, but in October I put in some outdoor ones and they are absolutely magnificent, like "proper" hyacinths in the most vivid of colours. They are huge with the most delicate scent, which is why I want the pleasure of them as cut flowers. I'm going to give it a go. And I can hear you saying "Piccies please", but although I now have a phone that takes photographs, I'll need a lesson on how to get these on to the PC! Chat over, see you in the chat thread.

Thanks for the advice. They're new to me, but I agree, the smell is/was amazing.

It's almost prime Bluebell season by the way if you want to visit any local Bluebell woods. I've got next weekend pencilled in.

FF, assuming your phone has bluetooth, the easiest way is to transfer them to your pc via Bluetooth (Options, send, Bluetooth, or something like that), then upload to a free photo hosting site (I use photobucket.com, but there's loads to choose from) and paste the link provided into a message on here.
