  • Squash/pumpkin seedlings

Hi I know they need heat to germinate but after that would they be ok going out in to a cold (insulated with bubblewrap) greenhouse? the min night temp at the moment is around 7 degrees or would they need to stay in the house a while ?

I usually sow my squash / pumpkins in about mid April otherwise I find that they get too big before I can put them out and I run out of space. If you've already sown and not got room inside you could try one outside but it would seem a bit cold for it at present as the temps are bound to plummet again in a week or so.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I would agree with the above comments. Pumpkins do not tolerate the cold very well, especially frost. The plants will be more vigorous growing in the warmer temperature anyway. Too early and the plant will become stunted.

I would suggest sowing pumpkin seed at the end of April/start of May to ensure all risk of frost has passed by the time it comes to planting out.

thanks everyone, no I havn't sown them yet, just going through my seeds and as most of the packs say March-May wondered if it was worth starting them but they would of had to go out as soon as they had germinated really because all the south facing window cills are full of toms, peppers and chillis. I think I will leave them for now. Although I might try one, just as an experiment, as I have loads of saved pumpkin seeds so if it fails its not a big deal I can always resow at the correct time. Thanks again
