May time flowers

    May time flowers

    Hi,

    We are getting married mid-may and wanted to grow flowers for use at the wedding. Is there anything we can plant now which will flower in time?

    P.S this will be our first time growing flowers, we've always grown veg before.

    Jojo - you have set a rather difficult question...
    1) whereabouts in the country are you growing?
    2) which end of May are you talking about?
    3) can you go greenhouse or are you wanting to do open ground?
    For a May wedding I would always advise May blossom and whatever is in the garden. You could possibly go for freesias and lily of the valley - but the first would need cossetting and the latter keeping a bit cool so they don't flower too early.
    Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

      The Hawthorn blossom (or may) will be out. Scraggy and prickly - it will give your OH (to be) something to think about!

        If you start now, you could be picking cornflowers.

          Sorry should have given more details. We ae in South Wales and need the flowers for Mid-May. At present we are growing open ground, though we are waiting to hear if we are going to inherit a greenhouse in the next couple of weeks.

            Have a look at this plant - Hesperis matronalis - not everyone's cup of tea but an early flowerer! (specially in a greenhouse) - it is perfumed and quite delicate pale lilac and white. I reckon it would be a good filler for some expensive bought in specials. Also called sweet rocket
