  • Egret Orchids

I saw these advertised on the back of the latest T&M catalogue which I received today.
    Arent they beautiful?
I am sorely temped by them, but have a strong aversion to T&M, and the price tag (£9.99 for 3 bulbs)
I am not really into orchids but wondered if anyone has ever grown them and what they actually turn out like?

I too admired them in 2009 TM. I obviously didn't give them the right growing conditions. They are rice field plants. They grew to about 4". Teeny teeny blossoms and then rotted. If you can work out what they need and when you may have better luck. I will keep my fingers crossed.

I decided not to, as I cant justify spending a tenner on 3 bulbs that might have a hissy fit if I dont plant them right

I adore orchids so couldn't resist. One didn't grow at all, the other 2 flowered before also dying. The plants and flowers were very tiny. I have about 30 other orchids and although some are more difficult to grow than others haven't encountered this problem before.

Thanks for asking this question - I'm a little undecided but do realise they need quite exacting conditions of light, heat, wet/dry, when/when not, to feed and so on.

Don't know how flush I'm feeling but may give them a go this year - you only live once and this does far less harm than ciggies/booze or worse!

Just this week got 6 reduced Dendrobium for £2.45 each - which I don't think is too bad. I've bought at the end of the flowerimg cycle so effectively paid £2.45 per bulb/corm/tuber - not quite sure what's underneath the bark chippings!
