    would welcome any suggestions, thanks. not been having much luck.

    You could probably look at bog/marginal plants if your ground tends to stay wet. Things like Gunnera, Rheum, Flag Iris and according to this site ...

    ...roses, mexican orange blossom, and phormiums should do well too.

      My fuschias seem to be doing ok and I'm on the same clay as you,I have broken it up a bit with plenty of organic material over the last couple of years

          I grow on heavy boggy thames valley clay so I sympathize. I find japanese anemones,
          hardy fuchsias, stinking gladwin iris, helenopsis and hemerocallis thrive in the stuff. They were thriving when I arrived here in 1996 and still going. The previous owners were not gardeners and left the garden to it!
          I admit I do try to add a layer of home made compost every year and this has really helped.
