  • Crocosmia

I have a massive bundle of crocosmias on my plot. They looked lovely in flower, but now are drooped over onto my other beds and look just awful.

However, my plant guide book tells me to leave them be and let them sort themselves out.

This can't be right, can it?

Surely I would need to cut them down to ground level....?

I have always cut my croco's down because nobody told me not to. They still pop up every year and are going from strength to strength. Someone else may tell you I am wrong, though. See what the other grapes advise.

I don't cut mine, but then they're not interferring with my beds! I let them die back naturally and let the leaves form a kind of ground cover. This stops the weeds, and provides a cosy home for the winter bugs.
A good beginning is half the work.
Praise the young and they will make progress.

I got some seeds from mine - daft question but can I sow them? Or do they only grow from bulbs?

We have a lot of crocosmia. Some, that are near the paths, we cut back and tidy up. Others we just leave to their own devices. Have never noticed any difference between the two groups when it comes to flowering.

I'd say, if they're in your way, cut them back.

daft answer - surely everything comes from a seed at some point.

They may take a fair while to give up flowers though - give it is a go is always my take on gardening

Not sure how well they grow from seed but they are easy to devide. They spread in an unusual way in that new bulbs are formed directly above the old ones. It is easy to dig a few up and seperate out the bulbs then replant where ever you want them.

                Cosseting hybrid crocosmias

I have the really tall "lucifer" one and a shorter yellow one.
The common weedy one pops up all over the place if I let
it. I have to admit thought that it does look lovely next
to bronze or purple leaved plants and shrubs. I have treated
myself to one of these special new hybrids and worried it wont make
it through the winter. I thought they liked moisture but not sure.
I wont cut them down but leave the foliage as some sort of protection.

Any tips on successfully overwintering the slightly more tender exotic
                hybrid ones? Thanks
