  • Rhubarb !!!

(The title should be read in a suprised voice) Here it is the 5th Jan and me rhubarb is coming through! should it be? and is this normal. Should I now start putting on the well rotted horse manure?
It's not the growing old I mind but the growing stupid with it!

Same here up in sunny (not!) Manchester GPD!! I posted a thread about it a few days ago, seems its nothing to worry about, tho I have no idea about whether tis time to start manuring it yet! I'm sure some of the other grapes will be along with some info soon tho!
    Blessings

My rhubarb now has about 20cm of stem and reasonable sized leaves on it. I was considering forcing it but by the looks of it it will be ready in a few weeks time

Does any one know if it the stems will be affected by frost (If we ever get any!!!)

Also as it has started so early do you think the cropping season will be the same, e.g. as it started early will it finish early?

My rhubarb too is coming through, we have had a mild winter in these parts but I am ready with fleece just in case. I manured mine at the start of winter but it isn't too late, get some muck down Mrs Dobby, you can spread it round the crown but it's best not to let the manure touch any of the buds as they can burn them!! It has been mild for us Mancunians this year bar the wind, the rain that comes in sideways and the sleet...most of it in summer...

            Rhubarb!

Managed to get down to the plot for 4 hours today, and snapped a piccy of our rhubarb! Here it is in all its glory! Theres 7 crowns, all coming through! The largest leaf we've got has a stem about 6" long, looks like a possible bumper harvest this year!

Just checked my 'Timperley Early' which I dug up & replanted in a tub & it's sprouting nicely.

After reading the thread i went down to check on my rhubarb, chuffed to bits to see that mine is also coming up. Only just peeping its head out of the manure i put on earlier. Really pleased as this is some established crowns i aquired!! As a newbie it brings such joy when i see something growing. My daughter is taking such an interest too. Went to buy her a selection of seeds to cultivate for herself at the weekend. A future grape i hope!! She is 8.Click image for larger version

No there isn't a childrens section but we are holding the first Grapevine Virtual Vegetable Show this year and there will be two catagories for children. I am writing the shedule now!
