  • Storing roses over winter...

The school garden is having a makeover as the roses were looking spindly and had black-spot and canker.
    So...
last week they were all dug up and left, bare-rooted in plastic sacks. I've brought them home and said I'd care for them over winter and see if any were fit to replant in spring. They are Arthur Bell and Trumpeter (I think).
I fully admit to being a complete rose novice - I have an idea of pruning and common diseases and that's about it.
I was planning to keep them somewhere over winter, give them some TLC and if any survive, replant them at the school somewhere.

Can anyone give me any pointers ?

Will they keep bare-rooted over winter if the roots are moist ?

Or would I be better digging them in somewhere sheltered (I have a potato bed that's empty now so they could go in there and be covered in fleece through the bad weather)

Is there anything I can do to them now to treat the blackspot ? Or do they have to be in foliage for that.

    Thanks a million.

Cut back any long stems and wayward roots, Heel them in (dig a trench and plant them fairly close together, then firm in) your spare bed - water well and just keep an eye on them. No point treating for anything at the mo, the plants need to be actively growing to absorb fungicides etc. Roses are perfectly hardy so won't need covering, in fact they'd be better left uncovered. How many plants have you got?

is it ??!! Blimey - better check then. I didn't buy them they were already in situ when I took over the garden. Will check the tag and report back.

Edit - Checked on the web and they're both floribundas apparently. Well not at the moment as they look like rather poorly bags of sticks.
