  • Black Pansy

I know they're not exactly difficult to grow but Pansies behave so well for me that they're one of my favourites.

It has a very slight purple sheen but it really is as black as night.

Here's one of his cousins too.

Yes they are great. I grew the black variety this year too.

I've got some black viola which I save seed from every year, but it never really thrives ... it's quite hard to grow, compared with the commoner colours which go on and on and on

I've got Molly Sanderson. Can't remember if she's technically a viola or a pansy - probably the former as she's petite.

Lovely deep black, but then I also like the more subtle cousin too.

I've sown 24 viola 'sorbet mixed' in modules for the garden, first time so hopefully they will germinate.

I love the violas too but I've not grown the black ones.

I've just looked up Flummery's Molly Sanderson which is indeed a jet black Viola and it's lovely.

I was going to take some pics of the Violas I have but they're a bit threadbare. I have some new ones a couple of inches high and they're an ice-blue with a yellow centre, so I'll take some pics of those when they appear.

What I did notice about homegrown ones was how large and vigorous the plants were compared to retail ones.
