  • Cucumber - Greenfingers

Just a quick post to say how superb these cucumbers are and by far the best I've ever grown. They are an F1 and relatively very expensive (£4 for 4 seeds ) but I got 100% germination and they are so prolific and taste fanstastic. They only grow small gurkin size so its a couple of weeks from them forming to cropping. Definietly top of my recommendations list.

I think they are a glasshouse. I've got them growing in my greenhouse anyway. You pick them so young the skin stays thin and is very smooth.

Girl47 - I'm not sure I can help. Have you watered them enough? Did you plant into decent amount of compost or just bare earth? I find that with other crops they perform very poorly unless I use a decent volume of compost in the hole before transplanting. As for my cucumbers they are in growbags but they did take a long time to get going.

Watered them loads - but didnt put any compost in!!! However - I also planted courgette & Butternut squash on same site ( different beds) - with no compost and they seem to be doing fine.... Any thing I can do to revive the cucumbers now?

Give them a dose of liquid seaweed from the bottom? Mine have been outside in 12" pots for ages and they are just showing signs of sturdy growth.

I agree - give them a dilute feed and see how they go. They should pick up and give you something but don't expect massive yields and don't try and force it by over fertilising. In future always try and give your plants the best chance by giving them something decent to establish into. Home made or bought compost is great and you will find it is there next year so over time you will vastly improve the soil condition.

I bought 5 green fingers seeds from an ebay seller for 1.85 - the seller is nutley232 and has some advertised at the moment. So far, tried germinating 2 indoors and both came up - they are now outside in a cold frame. They will go into a growbag ourdoors quite soon as they are advertised as outdoor variety. My plants are tiny, glad to hear they are going to be yummy !

Best mini cuc that I've tried is Superbel, the seeds came from B&Q. They're prolific and tasty and tolerant to powdery mildew. DT Brown's do them now, but the seeds were cheaper at B&Q D.T. Brown's - Superbel F1

I've got 2 planted in my landshare garden. They are looking good considering the soil is poor, and all they got was some 10 year old sheep manure at planting time. I've watered them twice a week, we've had no rain since they went in. Tonight they have the female flowers showing so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I know this is an old thread but I was doing a search and this came up.

I grew 'mini greenfingers' this year outside in a sunny spot and it is absolutely fantastic so echo the recomendation, Ive had about 15 cucumbers already and proabably get another 15 more from 1 plant, it it takes up no space at all, ive just stuck it in a 5 litre pot, water it daily and feed once a week.

The taste is great, really fresh and sweet and this skin is thin so you dont have to peel.

Ill grow a few more next year

I've got two plants of Bella F1, and one of Cucino F1.

Bella produces slightly ribbed, dark green fruits approx. 35cm (14') in length.
Cucino produces smooth, dark green 'mini' fruits in good number (snack sized).
Both types are new to me. They're recommendations from the good folks on this forum.

I'm growing the plants in my greenhouse, which is draped in 40% shade netting.
I'm using tubs of compost (rather than growbags), which are stood in deep saucers. I fill these with water every evening, to the point where no more can be absorbed (each plant takes about 3 litres), and feed once a week.

The Cucino has been a bit slow to get going. Nothing much to report on that one yet. The Bella are racing away! I have them growing along a horizontal track (bamboo and lengths of wire) about 4' off the ground. The main shoot is growing about 4" every day. No proper fruit yet, but they're there in miniature, each a couple of inches long.
A few flowers, and lots of tendrils stretching in search of objects to coil around.

I'm trying Vega F1 having never grown cucumbers before. They are a mini variety and grow to about 4 inches long. Very impressed with the 2 I have eaten - nice size for 1 person. I have had to hand pollinate even though they are outside as if I don't the mini fruits tend to go yellow and shrivel up. I grew 3 plants, expecting to have problems, but all 3 (2 outside and 1 in a greenhouse) are growing well.
