They never climb straight away. You'll need a couple of lots of tying in before they start to grow the tendril thangs that make them hang on. Just when you finally decide you've got the world's first non-climbing variety, they'll be off!

Mine are the same way (this is my first year growing them).. I've been tying them up as they grow along. It's only in the past two weeks or so that they've started to 'grab' onto the guide strings on their own accord. I read on a website that it's best to always tie them regardless if you're looking to grow them for cut flowers (some even advised cutting off the tendrils!).

Mine are still titchy - do you feed them with anything to ensure good growth and blooms?

My morning ritual includes proping up sweet peas, but they are taking grip slowly, and it seem that once they start upwards, then they really got going

I tie some thin string or cotton around and along the canes at just above ground level, and them one more a little further up. The firsttendrils seem to like this, so no tying in.
I dont have to bother after that theyre up and away.

Sweet peas and mangetout just climbing the first ladder down here in somerset.
