Best toms?

local tomatoes for local people, Dave...at the local shop...........................
However i am growing
Yellow pearshaped (does what it says on the tin)
Chelsea Mini (cherries)
Grinta ( a small red pearshape i think)
Ola Polka (a yellow cherry i think but i might have these two mixed up )
Pink Brandywine (very large)
St.Pierre (bog standard tom)
Roma (a roma!)
there are SO MANY tomatoes ....you could start with a real easy one like a moneymaker or gardeners delight......................

Still not got my greenhouse yet but i might get some as you suggest and stick em on the windowsill till i can get them undercover.

I always grow Gardener's Delight. Very sweet cherry tomatoes with high yields.

Just for interest what toms do the supermarkets use by the way,just so i can avoid buying them

Impossible to answer question that one Dave, sooooo many to choose from! Have a look at this thread, a few people have put lists of what they're growing - if something is on a few people's list then it's probably a good one

We just fill the greenhouse with 'Sungold' and the kids just go in and help themselves!!

If I had to narrow down my choices, it'd be Tamina (for ordinary salad looking toms), Sungold (for easy to grow, sweet cherries) and Amish Paste (for plum/cooking tomatoes).

blimey Davdandy you've stumbled onto one there!!!

I am growing Red Alert because my mum always used to and I loved the flavour
I am growing Garden Pearl because it was a freebie with GYO a few months back

why not pick a few varieties and give them a whirl
there are just so many!!!

I don't know the answer. I don't think it's a variety issue though. I used to work in a tomato nursery as a summer job. The tomatoes were picked mostly as they were just turning red and then they were sorted by size and quality and kept in cold storage until collected. The big sellers (supermarkets) wanted the unripe tomatoes so they would have time to distribute them. I reckon they have an inferior taste because they are not sun ripened and kept chilled. When I ate a ripe tomato straight from the vine at the nursery they tasted great.

I wouldn't avoid supermarket strains until you give them a try yourself.
with supermarkets it is mainly their ridiculous shipping/storage procedures

This season my grow list is

Roma
Nicholaevna Pink
Sophie's Choice
Gardeners Delight
Moneymaker
Red Cherry
Kerches Gold

Not quite sure where they're all going to go what with my plans for cucumbers and the vast number of chilli plants I already have!!

BTW - has anyone grown any of the more unusual varieties from my grow list? I'd be interested to hear anyone's experiences of growing/yield/taste.

Moneymaker - for reliability
Sungold - for taste and the unusual
Gardeners Delight - for sweetness
Ailsa Craig - for maincrop

But I would also recommend sungold and black cherry.
