  • What is this nice smelling shrubby flower thing please?

I inherited this from my house's previous owner. It's about 2 feet high and the same across. It smells lovely, sort of anissedy? It must have had flowers last year, as there are lots of small dried flower heads. Anyone know what it is please?

I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

Give it a good trim before it starts really growing again otherwise it'll get a bit leggy and droopy - our two are about football size in the front border.

Ours still hasn't flowered - might there be an obvious reason for that do you know? Nice photo btw.

OOh, I don't know. We chopped ours back after flowering and it has grown back well so far...I'm hoping it flowers again!

I bought five of them a couple of years ago, and found they didn't like my garden AT ALL. They didn't flower, barely grew, and I suspect would have soon died completely if I hadn't pulled them up first. They prefer the gritty, low nutrient, well drained soils favoured by a lot of herbs, I think. And sunshine!

That's what they've got. They're in a small front garden border, dotted in a line with some lavender - the lavender love it.

Hmm... I'd just have a stern word with them then

They prefer poor, free draining soil in a sunny spot.

Grew them from seed about 8 years ago, they seem to have a 2 year cycle.
Year 1, grows scented foliage and stays neat.
Year 2, produces small yellow flowers on relatively long stems and goes horribly leggy and untidy.
Remedy - cut back hard at end of year 2 and start cycle again. Dried foliage clippings make good addition to potpourri.
