  • Aromatica Begonia

    Hi all
I have been tempted to acquire some of the above scented begonias
as they look and sound fab.
Has anyone tried them before and what did they think of them?.
Any tips on sprouting the corms without them going mouldy!!

My Begonia tubers are still overwintering. I have them stored in my garage in boxes that are covered in newspaper.
Looking at my diary from last year I bought them out from overwintering on the 27th March. By the 1st of May they were ready to be potted up.
I simply laid the tubers in a tray and gave them plenty of light. After a couple of weeks the tubers started sprouting their green shoots. ( Chitting potatoes comes to mind )
The lack of using soil or watering this way would almost certainly omit any chance of them going mouldy.
I use a sulphur powder on the tubers when the stalks have been removed prior to the overwintering. This discourages any rot & disease.
I posted a few photos of my begonias in my blog yesterday.
Never mind the TWADDLE here's the SIX PETALS.

I had some aromatic begonias last year, free with an order. They were very pretty, but I can't say the fragrance was very noticable. They might not be the same ones you are thinking of getting though.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

        Ta for tips!

Cheers for the tips. I hear variable reports about how scented they
are but I thought I would give them a whirl.
I will try sprouting the corms without the earth this time.

I got T&M's Spring Bulb and Plant catalogue and they are offering 5 Begonia Aromantics FREE with every order. They quote a RRP of £16.65 but they may be less elsewhere. So only worth it if you want something else from T&M and pay the £3.95 P&P.

Mind you at the front there are some £5 Best Buy offers which may be of interest.
