I would like to do a survey on what each allotment,s policy is regarding hosepipes as ours may do away them. One comment being that there is alot of allotments that do not allow them.

I would like to do a survey, could everyone enter name of allotment and if hosepipes are allowed and in what context. weather just to fill water butts or unlimited etc.

    Thanks

We have a hose licence costing a tenner for people who want to water with a hose pipe, if people just want to use a hose to fill a water butt there is no charge

            Evington Hilltop AS.

£8 per plot per annum (March to November) for the use of a hosepipe. Sprinklers are not allowed nor isleaving a pipe unattended.

The use of a tap without a hosepipe is incorporated within the current rent. Our site makes a healthy profit most years from the hose rents.

No water at all...use your own butts or one of the 2 wells full of sludge.

We are proposing a similar policy at our allotments this year Marion! I like the idea that if anyone still wants to use a hose they have to pay a tenner but wonder at others 'borrowing' the hose.
I also feel water butts should be filled up with rainwater wherever possible.

I have about 12 water butts and one 1000ltr container which has meant I have NEVER needed mains water even though we have it on tap! I also have a dozen chickens who have only tasted rain water since i've had them!

Yes, we do allow hose pipes but generally dissuade newcomers from sprinkling it around. It just makes the weeds grow and discourages deep rooting. We encourage them to sink in pots, dig irrigation trenches to fill etc... and if they must sprinkle in a drought to really soak it in the evening....rather than just tease it at midday

Everyone uses the warmer water with cans most of the time. We share the bill equally.(works out less than the tenner we charge)

When I took over the site I donated a load of water butts I got through work...it obviously helps to make it easy for people to do the right thing. All folk are taught to refill those near the taps for the next tenant to have warmed water I'm not a 'ban it' sort of fella...prefer to encourage...to be fair ...there is no telling some folk anything! so it might only work on a 18/20 plot site like ours...guess were blessed

We are in a small West Sussex village.

                      Woodland road Allotments, Cwmbran, Gwent.
We have 30+ allotments with I think 6 stand pipes -with hosepipes and no sprinklers. As many water butts as are required.

Bishop's Stortford Town Council, ten sites.
Hosepipes specifically totally banned on all.
Water supply is by cattle troughs ONLY, no taps.
Water is included in the £2.50 per rod charge.

BSTC has intimated that if, as happened at one site, taps get installed by plotholders and the metered water usage goes up then all tenants on that site will get a bill for the water used.

The naughty site used more water than all the other nine sites put together that year.

The council handyman came round and removed the two taps that had caused the problem.
