I like to get Jan. 1st. over then I start to look for (very distant) signs of spring. Tiny, hard catkins, honeysuckle thinking "Will I, won't I, start to come into leaf!"
And, in very sheltered lanes down here in Devon, primrose leaves pushing through.

Longest night, darkest hour is just before dawn, then SPRING!! Crocus pushing through the snow, snowdrops, primrose and then ... those first asparagus shoots (yes I know but mine were very early last year). And if Marshalls ae already sending out seed pots spring must be here. And I saw a black headed gull with a black head yesterday - ususally they get those in February around here. I can feel myself cheering up every day I look at my 'count down to solstice' widget.

I'm just being told on a business forum that 31 Dec has a leap second in it and so that is the longest day

He very kindly pasted a link to the info but it scared me too much so here it is if you wish to view - please do let me know when you have read and understood and can translate into Piskie speak

The longest day - but not the longest period of daylight - or shortest period of daylight.
