  • Warning computor virus !

Yesterday i got a trogen worm virus on my computor and had to reset my computor back to factory settings to get rid of it.
It was sent to me in an e-mail with a friend of mines name as the sender an inclosed a video by you tube but was spelt YUO TUBE and will ask you to update your flash player that is when it goes wrong.
this virus collects data and sends it back to the virus sender so if you have receved any e-mails from me delet them straight away.

never ever open email attatchments even if they are from a friend, unless, you have emailed them and asked them if they sent you one.

virus senders gather email address via msn etc, so it may look like it comes from a friend, but it doesn't

install AVG, this will check your emails, and you can right click on an email attatchment and get it checked without it being opened.

best way is never open attatchments AT ALL unless you are expecting one, especially anything labelled YOUTUBE etc.

never upgrade flash or any other software via a link in an email or on a website, if you need an upgrade, google for the correct supplier address and upgrade direct from the legit site.

it wouldn't shock me, but norton can be complicated to use, and you by passed it by opening the attatchment before asking it to check it.
no antivirus can protect you if you bypass it, i AM surprised it couldn't remove the virus without you having to resort to a reset, you can search for viruses on the symantect site and get specific instructions on how to remove them, sometimes they even have a download to do it for you, in these cases you need to put your pute into safe mode to get online ( or use a clean pute)and download to a usb stick.

i must admit though time and time again i have reset to make it easier.

to be honest i am a begger for 'vanilla-ring' my pute every now and then to start clean.

AVG is simple to use, as good if not better than norton, and free, i have NEVER been virused since having AVG in 7 years, apart from once, when i deliberately bypassed it despite it warning me, and that was microsofts own legit site that virused me ( they tell you to switch of anti virus ware to download) never again.

to 'vanilla' is to take the computer back to the OS and nothing else, even all the bells and whistles it came with, then start from scratch putting software you use back on, not all the stuff thats there when you buy it and never use.

there is so much background carp on shop bought computers, that you never use and slow down usage.
a 'vanilla' is a basic operating system, windows or linux, no extras.

almost, a reformat is back to factory settings, unfortunately unless you installed windows yourself, then you have allsorts of rubbish put on there as well, from dell, pcworld, acer etc, 'vanilla' means nothing etc windows/linux, no bells no whistles no cr@P, you would be surprised how fast it runs without. anyone how has had a 'build' done will know the difference.

vanilla-ring it yourself means you have to know what should be there and whats necessary, would not advise unless you do.

I built my own HTPC running Vista and I use it purely for HD/Blu Ray movies play back which is very processor hungry. The kids are banned from using it and filling it with crap.

Hmmm, we call it re-formatting when we take everything off, including the OS Don't suppose it matters what it's called though s'long as the pooter gets fixed

i do take it off, then reinstall, but without all the cr@p, so i will re-install windows, but not all the stuff that came with the factory build.
